Sequence of 4 different types of foot-sweep ashi-waza drills. (Note: Ashi-waza means “foot technique”, not all of which are foot-sweeps – hiza guruma and uchi mata are considered ashi-waza as well.) The hands should follow the feet!

  • Deashi-barai style sweeps, left and right, 20 total
  • Okuri-ashi-barai style sweeps, in a shuffle-step like the Nage-No-Kata, left and right, 20 total
  • Okuri-ashi-barai style sweeps, from a hop, working explosive movement while maintaining balance and follow-through, left and right, 20 total
  • Kouchi-gari style sweeps, quater-turn rotations, catch the heel with the following foot, pull the sleeve around, and push the lapel, left and right, 20 total

Important: The foot should be turned so that you are catching the ankle with the bottom of your foot. The pinky toe should be gliding along the mat.
